Types of Hydroseeding

At Houston Hydroseeding, we tailor every application based on soil conditions, slope, drainage, and project goals. One of the most important variables in any hydroseeding project is the type of mulch used in the slurry. Different mulches serve different purposes—from erosion control to soil rebuilding—so selecting the right product ensures stronger germination, healthier turf, and long-term success.
Below are the primary types of hydroseeding mulch we offer.

Pro-Ganic® Mulch (Soil Replacement Technology)

Best for: Poor soil, fill material, nutrient-deficient sites
Pro-Ganic mulch is one of the most advanced hydroseeding products available and a true game-changer for projects with weak or non-existent topsoil. Unlike conventional mulches, Pro-Ganic is engineered with organic matter, nutrients, and soil-building components that actively improve soil structure and fertility.
In many cases, importing topsoil becomes unnecessary when Pro-Ganic is used. It creates a biologically active growing environment that supports root development even in select fill soils or areas with severe nutrient deficiencies.
Key Benefits of Pro-Ganic Hydroseeding
For projects where soil quality is the primary limitation, Pro-Ganic delivers the highest level of long-term performance available in hydroseeding.

Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) Mulch

Best for: Steep slopes, critical erosion control, high-risk washout areas
Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) is a premium erosion control mulch composed of elongated fiber strands bound together with a water-resistant bonding agent. When applied, it forms a continuous, seamless protective blanket over the soil surface.
Unlike traditional mulches:
BFM is typically reserved for extreme slopes, embankments, detention ponds, and high-erosion environments where performance is critical.
Because of its advanced formulation, BFM is more expensive than standard mulches and is recommended only when maximum erosion control is required.

100% Wood Fiber Mulch

Best for: Slopes under 3:1, strong erosion control without premium cost
100% wood fiber mulch is a high-performance option for projects requiring reliable erosion control and moisture retention. However, not all wood fiber mulches are created equal.
Houston Hydroseeding uses only Enviro-Plus® 100% Wood Fiber Mulch, which contains:
This advanced binder adheres directly to soil particles, locking seed and fertilizer in place and significantly reducing washout. The tackifier is fully environmentally safe and breaks down into calcium and sulfur—both beneficial soil enhancers.
Ideal Uses for Wood Fiber Mulch
If you need dependable erosion control without premium pricing, our 100% wood fiber mulch is an excellent solution.

Blended Mulch (Wood/Paper)

Best for: General projects, budget-balanced erosion control
Blended mulch combines wood fiber and paper fiber to create a cost-effective, versatile hydroseeding solution. While many companies use a standard 60/40 blend, Houston Hydroseeding applies Enviro-Plus® 70/30 blended mulch—containing 70% wood fiber for improved durability and protection.
This enhanced blend:
Blended mulch is the most commonly used option for a wide range of residential and commercial projects. It delivers excellent performance at a balanced price point.

Paper Mulch (Not Recommended)

Best for: Limited budgets and non-critical areas only
Paper mulch is the least expensive mulch option and may be used when project budgets do not allow for wood fiber or BFM products. While paper mulch can provide basic coverage, it offers:
Paper mulch is generally not recommended, but in certain situations—such as reseeding over existing turf or in areas with minimal slope—it may be an acceptable short-term solution.
Our team will always advise on whether paper mulch is appropriate or if a more effective alternative would provide better long-term results.

Choosing the Right Hydroseeding System for Your Project

Every project is different. At Houston Hydroseeding, we evaluate:
This allows us to recommend the optimal hydroseeding system—whether that means Pro-Ganic soil replacement, premium BFM erosion control, 100% wood fiber stabilization, or cost-effective blended mulch.
If you’re unsure which hydroseeding method is right for your project, our experts are here to help.
